On the SkillsPath programme, school staff would take part in a one day training programme, delivered by a health and safety expert, which would take them through the 6 lessons that their students would follow. Staff would then be issued with a SkillsPath certificate of attendance Once trained, the staff could deliver the programme to all students prior to work experience, the student booklets would contain simple assessment procedures and can be signed off by the member of staff. The fact that students have followed a basic health and safety programme does not of course relieve any employer of their responsibilities towards health and safety. Although most employers are pleased that any pupils they take on work experience have a basic understanding of health and safety.

For schools following the ASDAN programme, the health and safety course can be accredited via credit transfer or substitute modules, and as such is worth a ¼ credit.

The course covers the following six area

Lesson 1 Introduction to health and safety

Lesson 2 Health and safety welfare including first aid and personal protective clothing

Lesson 3 Work equipment and display screen equipment

Lesson 4 Fire and electricity

Lesson 5 Manual handling

Lesson 6 Hazardous substances and noise
